Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
