Club Championship Leaves an Path of Injuries Which Is Damaging Soccer. But Will Anyone Pay Attention?

Cole Palmer's and Ousmane Dembélé photographs on top of the famous observation deck before the expanded FIFA tournament championship match appeared stunning, but it isn't wise to suggest that both could have benefited more from summer rest than competition.

Top athletes struggling with fitness problems was predictable before the governing body's expanded tournament kicked off. Jurgen the Liverpool manager described it as “The poorest idea ever,” citing concerns over long-term impacts of cramming more games into an already congested schedule. He stated, “Previously it was the Copa América and the European Championship, currently it’s the global club event, next year it’s the World Cup. That means insufficient rest for the participants taking part.”

UEFA permitting league games abroad represents a sad turning point, concluding soccer as we have known it.

It was far from the most extreme of forecasts. The schedule was previously under strain due to overcrowding from the coronavirus pandemic, the 2022's World Cup taking place in colder months, and the European elite competition increasing in size. The global players' union has consistently warned about increasing injuries and player burnout. However, the response has been to introduce additional football. Authorities do not take players and managers seriously. The danger is that the top players have little remaining to give when the World Cup – enlarged to 48 sides for the first time – takes place in North America, Latin America, and the US soon.

Cole Palmer's Example: A Star Pushed Too Hard

The Chelsea forward is the obvious example. The young talent was the inspiration for Chelsea at the Club World Cup, defeating the PSG star's French giants in the final, but he has scarcely been visible recently. The suspicion is that he has competed excessively. He has been troubled by a pelvic issue for a twelve months and, although there is not yet any indication that the forward needs an operation, it is hard not to think that he is, as Arsene Wenger once said of J. Wilshere, in the danger area.

This should be cause for alarm. A Chelsea or national team game without their star is a diminished experience. He is an outrageous talent, but everyone has physical boundaries. It is ridiculous that he has gone three straight summers without a proper rest. He assisted the national Under-21s to claim the European championship in 2023, was prominent when the first team made the Euro 2024 final, and was still turning out for his club until the midpoint of the summer previously.

At What Point Does It Become Excessive?

The attacker featured in 57 matches for club and country in the 2023-24 campaign, his first full year as an established national team and English top-flight star. He missed the group stage of the European competition last season but was participating in the elimination rounds and was man of the match when the Blues beat the Spanish side in the championship at the end of May. The PSG match was his 55th of the term. He had additionally represented England in their global tournament qualifier against Andorra at the start of summer.

Therefore, don't be surprised that Palmer has been absent for a large number of games currently. His is a longstanding problem, but it certainly could have been addressed if he had been granted a holiday previously. This is not a controversial point. There was zero preferential handling; the club had a shortened, 14-day pre-season. The PSG fixture was on 13 July, and Palmer began when a tired, unprepared side opened the season by tying 0-0 with the London rivals on August 17.

Real Madrid's T. Alexander-Arnold is out with a ruptured thigh muscle after participating in the global event after a draining season for his former club.

Enzo Maresca was at a loss to predict how the extra fixture load and absence of training period would affect his squad. Currently, however, it is clear that Chelsea are struggling. L. Colwill tore an anterior cruciate ligament on the opening day of pre-season. Liam Delap tore a muscle against Fulham, Dário Essugo has had an operation on a thigh injury. T. Adarabioyo and Andrey Santos are injured. Moisés Caicedo, E. Fernández, and João Pedro are competing through the discomfort.

Players' Union Report and Club Responses

FIFPRO's yearly player workload monitoring study found that players who took part in the Club World Cup after completing a domestic league season were among hundreds at the top of the male game who did not have adequate pre-seasons, hurting playing levels and increasing the risk of injury. Last week Maresca commented in relation to the number of injuries at Chelsea and PSG: “Probably it’s certain results from the Club World Cup.”

Can anybody listen? The Gunners' Noni Madueke, who left Chelsea after the Club World Cup semi-final, is sidelined for two months with a knee injury. PSG were missing Marquinhos, K. Kvaratskhelia, Désiré Doué, and Dembélé when they defeated Barcelona recently. João Neves and Fabián Ruiz have also had injury problems. PSG were returning in action in the Uefa Super Cup on August 13. The show goes on.

Spanish Madrid’s Injury Problems

Additionally absent at the present are Real Madrid's T. Alexander-Arnold and Jude Bellingham. The defender came off a grueling championship campaign with his former side, joined for the Spanish giants, featured in their progress to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, and is injured with a damaged muscle. Thomas the manager was saying in spring that the midfielder should have had an operation on a shoulder issue. The procedure was put off, though, with the pressures of the fixture list pushing another emerging talent to persevere and continue playing.

Why Deny the Proof?

Why deny it? Some people have noticed that athletes who didn't participate in the Club World Cup have also had injuries. This is not an adequate defence for the expanded event. Athletes will suffer injuries. Physical problems and fatigue have been on the rise. It still feels inadequate when authorities are shoving in additional matches, effectively risking the product they wish to sell. The football, remember, is inferior if the best players are missing or worn out.
