EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
