American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work unpaid during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

After the federal closure on October 1st, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, leading airports to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays caused by climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 American flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find another source of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airports indicated travel would be delayed due to a lack of workers - one of the highest since the shutdown started.

The US government shutdown reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy stated.

On that day, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as other flights stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

Flights at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airfield in the US, could encounter problems from reduced staff later in the day.

The agency warned passengers in the state to check with airlines about updated flight schedules.

The situation comes ahead of the third match of the World Series, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted flight services, including aviator instruction.

It prompted several flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on 25 January 2019, briefly halting travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.
