Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when attackers shot at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
