Citizens have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities delayed state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the proposal.

A high-ranking representative involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the morning session concluded without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are striving to narrow the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • After-conflict governance of the region

Public Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and numerous more were captured by Hamas fighters - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until all the hostages return no one will have peace of mind."

"After we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

Near the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel states forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.

Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "We need do any agreement needed for the hostages to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to end in return for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the area of the gathering, grieving people came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli shelling continued.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the dusk arrives, the fear appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, shared.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, especially my little child who places his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the remains of several people by the midday, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated another two victims had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the southern area, medical staff said.

The region's health ministry said 25 of the {territ
